Google’s June Update

An algorithm is like a cake recipe, but instead of baking a cake Google follows the recipe to put all of the pages in order when you search. Many business owners do not understand how frequently Google updates its algorithm. If you had to guess how often they updated, what would you say? Every year? Every 3 years? Every 10 years? Google tweaks its algorithm thousands of times a year, but only puts out major updates (referred to as core updates) a few times per year.

An example of how Google’s algorithm ranks results. I searched J&R Marketing and they came up as the first 3 results, with my site showing up 4th.

Right now, we’re in between two major Google algorithm updates. The first half of the update was released on June 2nd and the second half is scheduled for July to ensure the update’s quality. Google has been clear that some sites may experience gains or drops in ranking.

Does Google’s Update Matter?

What does this mean for your site? Right now, nothing. Google doesn’t go out of their way to give detailed information about the algorithm, so it will take some time before we know what changes to make to existing sites. The best course of action currently is to wait before making any speculative changes in an attempt to beat the algorithm.

Google recommends focusing on your content, with the goal of producing the best content possible. “That’s what our algorithms seek to reward.” If you’re a marketing business, posting blogs about marketing tips, theory, or tricks should help your ranking improve. Ensure your blogs are reader friendly. They should be easy to read, both visually and educationally.

To Summarize…

The long and short of the Google update is this: continue to make good content that’s user friendly, don’t fake your content, and don’t try to catch a falling knife by making quick and sloppy changes, as it may make your site ranking drop further.
