I’m both a music and movie nerd and while I love humor and movies with twists, I also love movies that relate to my every day life (marketing, business, consulting) While this list doesn’t include my all time favorite movies, it includes movies related to the business/marketing/sales world that I’ve found entertaining, motivating or just worth the watch.
So, grab your popcorn, sit back, and let’s explore the exciting world of business on the big screen.
- “The Social Network” (2010): The story is old now but the story on how Facebook became a global phenomenon and the challenges of power from entrepreneurs was amazing. At the time I was working for a Silicone Valley start-up and it made the movie that much more interesting.
- “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013): If you haven’t watched this movie, you should go watch it right now. I’m not the biggest fan of Jordan Balfor and how the movie showcased how he screwed people out of money but this is the only movie in this list in my all time top 15-20 movies.
- “Moneyball” (2011): I’m a nerd that loves analytics/statistics and played baseball my entire life. Great movie, even though it had it’s slow moments.
- “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006): Based on a true story, it’s motivating, sad, exciting and one of Will Smiths best performances. (at least in my opinion)
- “Jerry Maguire” (1996): I almost left this off the list but there as so many qoutables, and while the love story took over a lot of the story, the sports / management side of it was still really entertaining.
- “Glengarry Glen Ross” (1992): One of the most popular sales movies of all time.
- “Boiler Room” (2000): An amazing cast and a bit under the radar, this is my favorite sales movie of all time. A quote from the movie is printed out in my office – I printed it out over 15 years ago when I started my first company.
- “Office Space” (1999): More for its humor and just being a cult classic. “I’m going to need you to come into work on SATURDAY, that’d be greeeeat.”
- “The Big Short” (2015): I loved the story-telling and again this cast was amazing. This will bore some people even with the creative way of explaining the stock market crash in 2008, but still one I find myself watching at least a few times a year.
- “The Founder” (2016): A really interesting take on the McDonald’s story and will most likely change how you look at McDonald’s altogether.
These movies offer more than just entertainment—they provide lessons, inspiration, and a glimpse into the realities of the business world. From tales of triumph and innovation to cautionary tales of excess and ambition, each film offers unique perspectives on entrepreneurship and leadership. As time goes on, I’ll update this list and move movies out or into the top 10 accordingly.
